چکیده

(Current Biology 24, 509–518; March 3, 2014) Concerns regarding the western blotting and live-cell imaging data presented in this paper were reported to the journal editors. An investigation by a faculty committee at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where the work was carried out, concluded that some figures had been manipulated by the first author. In light of the committee’s findings, the corresponding author wishes to retract the paper in full. The first author agreed with the retraction of this work but declined further explanation. The corresponding author apologizes to the journal, the reviewers of the manuscript, and the scientific community for the inconvenience caused.

RETRACTED: Agonist-Induced GPCR Shedding from the Ciliary Surface Is Dependent on ESCRT-III and VPS4

BACKGROUND Membrane trafficking of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) is crucial for temporal and spatial control of cell-surface GPCR signaling. Receptor internalization is a well-documented method cells use for regulating a wide variety of GPCRs following their exposure to agonists. RESULTS We report that, upon agonist stimulation, a GPCR called vasoactive intestinal peptide receptor 2 (VP...

Mechanism of Ca2+-triggered ESCRT assembly and regulation of cell membrane repair

In muscle and other mechanically active tissue, cell membranes are constantly injured, and their repair depends on the injury-induced increase in cytosolic calcium. Here, we show that injury-triggered Ca(2+) increase results in assembly of ESCRT III and accessory proteins at the site of repair. This process is initiated by the calcium-binding protein-apoptosis-linked gene (ALG)-2. ALG-2 facilit...

Coordination of Substrate Binding and ATP Hydrolysis in Vps4-Mediated ESCRT-III Disassembly

ESCRT-III undergoes dynamic assembly and disassembly to facilitate membrane exvagination processes including multivesicular body (MVB) formation, enveloped virus budding, and membrane abscission during cytokinesis. The AAA-ATPase Vps4 is required for ESCRT-III disassembly, however the coordination of Vps4 ATP hydrolysis with ESCRT-III binding and disassembly is not understood. Vps4 ATP hydrolys...

ESCRT-III has an escort

jcb.201007018”> Wemmer et al. show. Like a big brother, Bro1 protects a protein complex that helps pinch off vesicles. The ESCRT-III complex serves as a pair of molecular scissors that cuts cell membranes, helping to separate dividing cells and enabling viruses such as HIV to bud from the cell surface. The complex also helps endosomes fashion intralumenal vesicles (ILVs), which hold wo...

Coordinated binding of Vps4 to ESCRT-III drives membrane neck constriction during MVB vesicle formation

Five endosomal sorting complexes required for transport (ESCRTs) mediate the degradation of ubiquitinated membrane proteins via multivesicular bodies (MVBs) in lysosomes. ESCRT-0, -I, and -II interact with cargo on endosomes. ESCRT-II also initiates the assembly of a ringlike ESCRT-III filament consisting of Vps20, Snf7, Vps24, and Vps2. The AAA-adenosine triphosphatase Vps4 disassembles and re...
